regular periods... kind of a dumb question, but ??

Hi all,

I have kind of a stupid question. We all know that the "28 day cycle" thing is a myth.... But what exactly do doctors mean when they ask you if your periods are regular??

I have been getting asked that quite a bit (as I am sure all of you do...)-- I am never quite sure what to say, because the lack of periods isn't a big symptom for me. I always figured that "regular" meant you just didn't skip altogether for months at a time.

Basically, my question is what does regular mean?

I will often have a pattern something like this: Cycle that is 18 days long. Then one that is 30+ days, then another that is 18 days, and so on. I have never much bothered charting or anything because I am not trying to conceive, and my PMS is enough that I always know when it is coming even if I can't be sure by the calendar. (lol)

Regular just seems to mean that you aren't amenorrheic in the medical world, but I don't know. It's like some doctors care and others don't. Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks,
