Re: cently Dx with PCOSFrom: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 27 Mar 2003 21:03:44 -0600 (CST)
No no, you've got it backwards - now that you've been diagnosed, your life is finally about to START! Living with PCOS when you don't know what is going on, that's the hard part. living with PCOS once you know you've got this condition and know how to treat it, you feel like you can do something about it. And, of course, you can. It will only get better from here on out. Not sure where you've read that weight loss helps PCOS symptoms, but that's either incredibly incorrect or reaaaallly outdated information. Many women, like 50% of women, with PCOS do not have the weight issue. Being at an average weight doesn't help their symptoms, and it likely won't cure yours. The weight itself is one of the symptoms of PCOS, not a cause of it. The best thing to do, at least the most effective by almost all accounts, is to lower and stabilize insulin levels. I think most women, at least here, do this with medication; many do it with a low carb diet and excercise, some have other techniques too. But that seems the main thing in controlling problems like the facial hair, as well as protecting you from further problems down the road. Read through this board, check out the PCOS Association at http://www.pcosupport.org, look for articles about PCOS places like inciid.org, and just type "PCOS" into any search engine. Take every website you see with a grain of salt (some sites, like medical journal sites for example, are more reliable than others!) but there is a TON of current info out there. Hope that helps you find at least some of your answers!
