The power of positive thinkingFrom: Leona (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 9 Mar 2003 09:34:53 -0600 (CST)
I just wanted to share my experience of PCOS and Metformin - I have been taking Metformin for about one year and was obese (93kg) with no periods and feeling very depressed and lacking in self confidence. I got all the usual side-effects of Metformin for about three months after starting the treatment and when they did repeat blood tests after 3 months of tablets my insulin resistance had gone up rather than down and my weight was constant despite practical starvation on my part. I was following the low carb diet and therefore feeling very fed up that it was not working. I kept taking the tablets and decided to adopt a rather positive attitude towards PCOS of determination (some say stubborness) to overcome this problem. Once I had come to terms with the fact that I had PCOS and it was not going to disappear overnight there was a rapid turnaround in symptoms - since November 2002 I have lost 20kg (without exercise) and have been able to reintroduce some carbs and some alcohol back without too much trouble. I have also started getting a normal menstruation cycle, the body hair has declined and I am a normal body weight for the first time in more years than I can recall. I also feel very happy in myself and have restored my personal confidence. I am sharing this because I realise how frustrating it can be when there does not appear to be any change through Metformin treatment - I was on a high dose for 9 months before any development in my health but it is worth sticking in there with the diet and tablets if you can, as you may get there in the end.
