Re: Abnormal Insulin levelFrom: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 7 Mar 2003 20:47:15 -0600 (CST)
Karen - Insulin is a hormone that moves sugar from your bloodstream into your cells. The more insulin you have, the faster sugar will move out of your bloodstream. So the two are related, but different! You can have 'abnormal' insulin levels, either high or low, and have normal sugar levels. Most women with PCOS have high insulin levels, the extra insulin is what's thought to cause all of the PCOS problems. But most women with PCOS also have blood sugar levels that are nomral or even slightly low - hypoglycemia. Adrenal glands are also affected by insulin and are a part of the whole hormonal imbalance that happens with PCOS. But when PCOS-like symptoms stem from the adrenals themselves, it's not PCOS but a different problem (usually Cushing's syndrome.) So checking on the adrenals is a good idea to pinpoint exactly what is going on.
