You have come to the right spot to get answers to your questions. The women here are absolutely terrific! In answer to your question there are many different symptoms to PCOS. You may have all or only a few. They may be mild or severe. Some symptoms (not all)are irregular or absent periods, ovarian cysts, excess facial and/or body hair, hair loss, obesity, acne, skin tags, high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, exhaustion, lack of mental awareness, decreased sex drive, excess male hormones, and infertility. Testing - there is no one test, but a set of tests. The first is a glucose tolerance test (GTT). The next is a cholesterol level test. This also should include tests on triglycerides, HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. Thirdly your testosterone, LH, FSH and androstenedione levels should be tested. If I understand correctly these are all blood tests. From what I've read there are a few more tests(urine 17-ketosteroids, laparoscopy, ovarian biopsy, serum HGC (pregnancy test) and basal fasting insulin. My dr sent me for the blood work and also an ultrasound. The ultrasound checks you for ovarian cysts. Some women have cysts and don't have PCOS, others don't have cysts but do have PCOS. So that is why the blood work is important too. I'm still waiting to see my dr and get my results. I was in a complete panic when my dr first suggested I might have PCOS. (I've been ttc for 15 mos)This has been one of the best places to get help and answers to my questions! Everyone here is really terrific! *Baby dust to all* (sorry this was so long!!) Vicki
