Re: Dr. wants me off of Glucophage! Help! From: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 27 Feb 2003 07:15:10 -0600 (CST)
Doctors like this make me so mad. I put them in the category of narrowminded and shortsighted. Glucophage is NOT a fertility drug. It is a drug that controls the absorption of insulin in the body. Insulin is secreted by the pancreas any time we eat any type of carbohydrate food. If there is a problem with one's insulin, usually making too much, not absorbing it properly, or a high sensitivity to it, insulin resistance occurs. Insulin resistance can be the cause of pcos and infertility, therefore, by correcting the insulin problem with glucophage, fertility can possibly correct itself. Although if one is trying to get pregnant or not, that has no effect on the bottom line cause, insulin resistance, and diet correction and glucophage is needed in either case. Your doctor is absolutely right about the diet part. Not all carbs are created equal, and there are many that use less insulin than others. But bottom line, any carb uses insulin in whatever amount, and if you have an insulin problem, carbs will effect you in a negative way. That's when glucophage comes in. I hope I explained this right. I get frustrated when I hear stories like this. Unfortunately, we women with pcos have to be a little tougher and stronger and determined when we talk to our doctors. We have to remind the doctors that they are working for US!
