Re: New to this & scared.From: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 5 Feb 2003 06:20:35 -0600 (CST)
Salma, No need to be scared. There are many things worse than PCOS, just pay attention to your health and take good care of yourself. Nearly everybody I know has a condition or risk factor for some illness. Knowing you have PCOS should encourage you to take extra good care of yourself. I have a case very similar to yours. I am now 30 and 16 weeks pregnant. I have never been overweight and I not insulin resistant, and my blood work is close to normal - except for elevated testosterone and a slightly scewed LH:FSH ratio. Scans showed the classic "string of pearls" in my ovaries. My cycles are irregular, but were helped with the pill, and later on herbal medicine when I was trying to conceive. I also used acupuncture which I f ound helpful, too. My advice, double check the insulin resistance and cholesterol and triglycerides if you are worried. If you are like me, they will be normal anyway, but it is good to keep tabs on them. Pay attention to how you feel on the pill. Usually you can choose another one if you're not feeling well on the first one you use. If you're symptoms worsen, consult your doc. as soon as possible. Most of them can be treated more easily if caught early on. Probably nobody can tell you for sure if your condition will worsen as you get older, so my advice is to take extra care with your diet and exercise program and go for regular checkups to make sure that everything remains normal. I found that gaining even a little bit of weight worsened my skin, so it gave me extra incentive to do things right. Of course everybody should do these things, but I feel that I need to be a little more vigilent because PCOS is considered a risk factor for developing other conditions. Look at it this way, we're a lot better off than many women who came before us who didn't know about PCOS and it's possible implications on long term health. At least we know it's something to be careful about - so we can take extra good care of ourselves early on. You're only 20, but it's never too early to start.
