Re: metformin and weightloss

Hi

I have been taking Metformin since August 2001. I have just hit the 50 lb weight loss mark (started out at about 210). Still have about 15 - 20 to go - but will see how I look as I get closer. I no longer recognise myself in the mirror. My weight loss seems to go in long plateaus and short bursts of progress. Currently am in a progress burst and have lost 15 lbs in the past 2 1/2 months - but before that there was nothing for like 6 months and I was going out of my mind with frustration - cause I was trying so hard and getting no where.

I can't say whether the met has had an impact on weight loss - or not dramatic - but maybe it contributed to the overall management of my pcos and so did help - even if indirectly. And I do feel so much better than before I started treatment. Weight loss is still difficult - but I exercise vigorously (aerobic and weight training) and often and follow a diet very low in refined carbs, and also try to limit calories as much as I can manage. I cannot emphasise enough the benefit of weight training. As you have more muscle you can burn more energy -even at rest, and I personally find that I feel so much better. Exercise even dampens appetite.

However, before I was diagnosed and started treatment (metformin, levothyroxine (for thryoid) and rocaltrol for low calcium) no matter what I did I couldn't lose weight. Now at least it is possible - though difficult.

Most recent research (though perhaps not so recent) - is that calcium metabolism is also implicated in weight loss. So make sure you get plenty (better through diet than just through a supplement - though surely a supplement would not hurt).

Sorry this is so long.

Best wishes
