Re: just started MET, what to do for horrible nausea? :-(From: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 17 Jan 2003 21:39:24 -0600 (CST)
If you're not already doing it, remember that it is VERY important to start slowly with metformin. You HAVE to work up to your full dose in teeny tiny little increments. Start at 250mg/day - if the nausea persists, you can even go to 125mg. When you feel better, slowly raise the dose, until you're at the level your doctor prescribed. For most women with PCOS this is around 1500mg, and it should take at least a couple of weeks (and sometimes much longer) to get up to that dose. If you're already doing this, Sorry!! :( The only other thing I can suggest is that many women find that the GI effects (nausea and diarrhea) go away within a few weeks. Hang in there. If it never does, I think it's worth it to look at other medications rather than put yourself through that!
