Re: preteen daughter has pcos???From: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 11 Jan 2003 10:51:58 -0600 (CST)
Please do not jump to conclusions. If she has distinct (with well-defined edges,) circular or oval-shaped areas of hair loss, with the rest of her scalp hair keeping its normal thickness and texture, and the skin in the hair-loss areas looks normal (not scaly, red, oozing, etc.,) it is much more likely to be something along the lines of alopecia areata. Fungal infection is also important to rule out, but it sounds as if that has already been done. Typical hair loss from PCOS (or any other androgen-associated types of hair loss) is a diffuse, overall thinning that mainly affects the frontal and superior scalp. You have already done the right thing by having the biopsies. Wait for the results before you make any decisions.
