Were you taking Provera ? It sort of sounds like that, though it could be natural progesterone. All that does is make you have a period. What it does is build up the uterine lining, and when you stop it, you have a period. It is not making your ovulate. The same with the birth control pill. It is an artifical period, and it levels out the hormones, as it prevents the strange fluxuations with PCOS. The key is to think about your goals, and what you want to accomplish. If you want to have cycles on your own, then losing weight, and sometimes Metformin can help. They help get your hormoenes back into balance, so that you can ovulate and have normal periods on your own. The big take home message here is: synthetic progesterone, and the birth control pill create artifical periods, and thus really do not do anything for PCOS. They will quell the extreme hormone fluxuations, and also help build up and then release the endometrial lining (to prevent build up and cancer), but these results are only temporary, and not long term. Of course you feel better when you have a period. That is the whole point, and why women have cycles anyway. What you decide to do is your decision, based on any information you can find.
