Re: Describe the process of ovulation to me pleaseFrom: Pat (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 27 Dec 2002 10:36:24 -0600 (CST)
Your question is a bit complicated, and the best thing to do is to really study how to track your cycles, and learn the ins and outs of that. The best book for that is: Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. There is a new edition for 2002, very up to date and current. I will also provide some links for you below. I will make an attempt to answer your questions here: 1. There is some research to support that conception actually occurs very early in ovulation, even a day or so befoe symptoms are seen. In general, in an average 28 day cycle, ovulation occurs around days 12-14. But, other things need to be considered: healhty sperm live sometimes up to 5 days. So, this allows a rather large window. 2. Usually when you have a period, it suggests you ovulated, and the hormones were working in harmony. But, not always. That is why tracking your cycles is so helpful, because when you have the signs of ovulation (side pain, change in discharge), this means the hormonal cycles are working. 3. AS far as how long it takes for the sperm to get to the egg, that is fairly individual, and I am sure there is something somewhere that tells that. As the link below suggests: seprm do much better in 'fertile mucous', and survive longer. So, that is why sometimes women conceive earlier or later, depending. The improtant things is to learn how to track your cycles, and do it. Then, when you talk with your health care provider about your cycles, you will have some very important information. This is rather a helpful, to the point page that might help answer your questions: http://www.fertilityuk.org/nfps20.html
