Appropriate dosage for Metformin

My Internist recently prescribed Metformin for PCOS, I also take Orthocyclen, Spironolactone and 3 Blood pressure meds. She started me on 500mg per day of Metformin. My question is shouldn't I be taking at least 1000 mg a day of Metformin? 500 mg. does not seem like an adequate dosage to me for the tx. of PCOS, based on all the research I have seen. Thanks!
