age the different aspects of pcos began? From: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 17 Dec 2002 08:46:41 -0600 (CST)
Hello, I'm wondering when the different parts of POCS were first noticed by people (even if you didn't identify what caused it at that time). The gynecologist didn't spot any cysts--at least none that I know of--during a normal exam for an 18 year-old. She was suspicious before, and another doctor had me get my blood tested last year, but the results turned out well. However, I've had irregular periods since they started in eighth grade. In the beginng, one lasted 'round forty days. Finally, sometime last year they seemed to set into a regular schedule (two months both w/ periods). Then I went about six months without one, so the doctor decided it was hereditary and gave me medicine to initiate bleeding. In seventh grade, I had a bald spot. The doctors injected steroids into the back of my head and said the cause of alopecia aereata is often unknown. This happened again a few years later in the same area(to the side, near the top). I also have the hirutism that continues to worsen. Recently I've gained weight. It began as intentional because my relatives thouht I was too skinny (I've kept myself around 1200 calories--sometimes 750 0r 1000 for the past year, which is what kept me skinny and decreased weight). Yet these past few days, I've been eating around 1200 calories and getting fatter. My stomache doesn't look too much fatter if I suck it in, but it wants to bulge out. Plus, in the past it seems like I gained weight very easy if not sticking to the 1200 plan. I began sixth grade at 62 pounds, I entered ninth in the 120s (without noticeably changing eating plans, and without growing very much--although I know bone density could be partof it). I'm having trouble with my vision: lights bother my eyes frequently; my alarm's red letters are very blurry, starting sometimes this year; I have "floaters" in my eyes, beginning a few months ago; I've tended to be a "squinter" somewhat for a long as I can remember, and sometimes driving w/o glasses makes my eyes sting; when I awake, it's like I'm looking through a white fog, and sometimes my eyes itch and feel as if I've been rubbing them into my pillow all night. I've had eczema since middle school, and if I don't use cold water, my skin flakes. After I turned 18, my pimples returned (although never very bad, I mainly just have black/whiteheads). Recently my hair started getting greasy much faster. The hair on my head is getting coarser (can pcos do this?). Sometimes I feel sick until I eat something sweet--kinda nauseus (and it seems like eating something helps clear my vision in the morning). My hands have always been a little shaky. I've been having trouble concentrating for the past year. It seems like things don't always "connect" s well and I retain less of what I read and hear. Plus, I went from being able to picture words I'd read once to wondering over spelling I once knew. So, basically, I'm curious about ages because I don't know how much this sounds like PCOS. Oh, and recently I got two brown spots in my skin, although perhaps they are stretch marks(?) as one is a narrow line about an inch or so long at the base of my back, and a group of lines is right beneath my armpit area (they almost look like birthmarks but slightly darker). Anyhow, thanks for any input!!!
