Jennifer; I too suffer from PCOS, I am on Metformin and it did take a couple of months for my body to get used to it but now I am feeling so much better. I even have the energy to go to an excersise class twice a week now. Before I was taking the met I did not have periods every month and after 2 months on it I was having one every month. On the pain that you are having under your rib cage is it on the right side? I had a bad pain on my right side went to a Gastrulogist(sp) and was told that I had a fatty liver. In a year the pain got to be so bad that I was getting sick from the pain. Went back to the GA and was told that I was just eating too much fat, and to cut back. I told him that I wanted a second opion so he sent me to a internist where he sent me for a gallbladder scan not a sonogram, and found out that my gallbladder was not dumping properly. So the I went to the hospital and had it removed and feel lots better no more pain. I do have a fatter liver and have to watch what I eat but it was not the only thing that was causing the pain and sickness. I hope this information is of some help.

What about other insulin sensitizers, like Avandia or Actos? Or there's the idea of treating some of the hormonal stuff with spironalactone (it messes up your periods but will help with facial hair and acne) and treating your body with a low carb diet. You do have options. It does sound like you really need a new doctor though - maybe it's time for an endocrinologist?
