Re: Bladder Infection?From: jodi (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 8 Dec 2002 15:56:57 -0600 (CST)
First of all this is not medically sanctioned advice... but I've been there on the insurance thing. My problem was flakey insurance that had me scared to risk going to the doc and being hit with a bill, rather than no insurance. Also, I hate taking antibiotics because they always give me yeast infections... I have had a LOT of bladder infections over the years, and probably only had to get medical treatment for them 3 times. (Five if you count the two I let progress to my kidneys...) If the infection is still mild, you can sometimes get rid of it with just drinking a LOT. I have had mild feelings of bladder infections coming on, and a day later all symptoms were gone. DRINK DRINK DRINK. Chug quarts and quarts of liquid. You should be sloshing. "They" say to avoid caffeine, it can irritate, whatever. But truthfully... caffeine makes you go A LOT. I find the small burning trickles of pee that come out with a bladder infection to be a LOT more irritating than a bladder full of good clear pee that doesn't hurt much, if at all. So I drank lots of diet coke. Yes, diet coke is bad for PCOS, yes caffeine is supposed to be bad for a bladder infection... hence, my saying this is not medically sanctioned advice. This is supposed to be bad, but it worked for me. Cranberry juice is supposed to be good, too, as mentioned. But it is generally SUPER high in sugar, so if you want to go that route, I'd suggest the ocean spray lite stuff. Costs a little more... but probably better for you. I would suggest avoiding the all-fruit-jucie stuff - Northland, Apple and Eve - if you are going to be consuming mass quantities, since this seems to have a laxative effect. At least, it did to me! A glass or two of this stuff is fine, but a whole bottle is like dynomite. If you have no improvement in symptoms in a day or so, or they get worse before that, then you should go to a doctor. If you are having SEVERE symptoms - ie, sharp lower abdominal pains, hard to stand upright, feeling like you're absolutely gonna cry when you go, and only like a teaspon of so of fire water seems to be coming out anyway - you want to consider seeing a doc sooner. Look in your phone book for a income sensitive clinic, perhaps. You may need antibiotics. If a bladder infection isn't treated, either home-style or medically, it CAN progress to a kidney infection, and believe me, those HURT! FWIW I learned with my last infection that if blood is present, it's no indication of the severity of the infection. I always thought it was, but sometimes you have it and sometimes you don't. So drink drink drink drink drink, and pee whenever you can, don't hold it. When you're over this, use preventitive measures - wipe front to back, wash front to back, pee after sex, try not to hold it when you have to go, and drink a lot of water as a general practice.
