Re: Birth control pillsFrom: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 5 Dec 2002 22:41:41 -0600 (CST)
Most pill packs containing monophasic pills contain 21 days of hormones and 7 days of placebos. Placebos are just blank pills that contain no hormones or medication whatsoever, you are actually skipping 7 days, no medication. This is the way the pill is set up. Some women ingest them just as a habit reminder, although it's not necessary. It's during these 7 days that you get your period. If you are choosing to extend your pill taking time for various timing reasons such as vacation, skip the placebos and move right on to the 2nd pack until you are ready to stop for 7 days so you can get your period. If you start spotting, it can mean a number of things. I will tell you what it means for me. It means my body is ready to have a period and it's time for me to take those 7 days off. Be aware that it is harmful to go more than 3 months without a period. Never stay on the hormone medication pills for longer than that.
