I was not labled IR but tried met for awhile and didn't like how it made me feel. I think I was getting hypoglycemic, even though I know that is not supposed to happen with met. I hate taking drugs. I don't even like to take Tylenol! Thanks.

Sure, Stacey! Actually I posted a message yesterday under "anonymous" (didn't realise you could send name only!) describing some of what I did, but here goes. I followed Ann Louise Gittleman's Fat Flush Plan (must have the book to do it- it's a goldmine of info and very necessary to success on the plan- find it on amazon.com and read a synopsis). Basically this is a detoxifying plan designed to support the liver, a very important but under-valued organ! It's a three-phase plan, cycling through detox/weight loss, ongoing weight loss and maintenance. I will admit that it is strict at first, and you are using ingredients that you may be unfamiliar with (unsweetened cranberry juice, flax seed oil, etc.) But I figure, if you don't change things, you won't change things! You cut out the main culprits to weight gain in women- white flour products, caffeine, sugar, alcohol, grain-based foods of all kinds (bread, pasta, rice, noodles) and potatoes. You take supplements (including essential fatty acids such as evening primrose oil) and concentrate on getting plenty of protein every day. Your carbohydrates come from the daily fruits and vegetables, and you drop weight and inches immediately. You continue on this strictest phase for two weeks at least, then decide whether to go onto Phase Two which allows different carbs (still vegetable ones). It takes dedication, thought, and organisation but it is phenomenally efficient. Besides losing ten pounds, I kicked a persistent (five year) problem with yeast infections, all by the end of the second week! I am faithfully supplementing with the following nutrients (all in amounts recommended by the author in her book, which are higher than the RDA on the bottles- those are "maintenance" doses, and you really need "therapeutic" doses. Please do research this yourself!): evening primrose oil(GLA), flaxseed oil (omegas 3 6 and 9), zinc, magnesium, a good all-round multivitamin/mineral, Vitmins A, C and E, selenium, chromium picolinate, and kelp for iodine/potassium (this is a personal one since I have slightly low thyroid function)and CLA. In an ideal world, we would get all these nutrients from a "healthy well-balanced diet", but sorry, these days our food is not anywhere near as nutritious as it was a few decades back, due to modern mass production techniques. So supplementation is necessary for the vast majority of us, especially those of us with hormonal imbalances. I have stayed with Fat Flushing pretty faithfully, deviating into Atkins (another low-carb plan) and also just being extremely strict with the carbohydrates every day...but I have NEVER stopped the daily handfuls of supplements. It can get pricey, but I figure, I am not buying all that expensive pre-packed, low-fat or low- calorie food I used to, or the Starbucks, or the cookies, etc. etc., and really I am so pleased with my results that it is worth it to me. I've given myself my fertility back- believe it or not, I am almost more pleased about that than the fact that I've dropped three dress sizes! It's the best thing I have ever done for myself and I hope that more women with PCOS will try this low-carb (NOT NO CARB!) approach. There are so many different ways- here are a few to look into to get you thinking. Search on amazon.com for the books and see what you think...The Scwartzbein Principle by Dr Diane Scwartzbein; The Zone by Dr Barry Sears; Protein Power (don't know), The New Diet Revolution (Atkins) by Dr Robert Atkins, The Insulin Resistance Diet (can't remember)....each of these approaches has their own take on it, but the common thread is this: CONTROL AND MODERATE YOUR CARBOHYDRATES! Good luck...
