Sonia, I'm not real sure what standard practise in the UK is these days, but in the US an "internal exam" of any sort os not usually used for diagnosis any more. They sometimes will still use an ultrasound, sometimes through the vagina, to look at the ovaries. but this is NOT a prerequisite for a diagnosis. I wouldn't think that a yearly exam and smear would tell you anything about PCOS either, although they really truly are beneficial for keeping an eye on your health.

If doing this is the only way to get yourself some medical treatment (although before going through it, you might ask her what that treatment entails - someone who is using a pap smear to diagnose PCOS is a little cracked I think so ask!) it might be worth it. OBGYN.net has a great tutorial available online that goes through the steps of an internal exam for you. Lots of women who are virgins have them done, and for the most part they're painless. I can understand that you'd feel uncomfortable, but let your gyn know this and ask if she can help you feel more comfortable. You can usually even have a friend come with you and stand up by your head so they can't see anything that's going on "down there" but can be there to support you. There's usually a shett over your knees so you can't see either. It's not as bad as it sounds, really - I know when faced with it in black and white it can seem very graphic! But think of it just like taking your temp or having an x-ray or anything else that's done to check your health. It's important, and it should go without a hitch for you if you have a kind doctor.

Either way, it may be worth making that other appointment for 8 months from now just in case you find yourself going nowhere with this doctor. You deserve to have somebody help you with all the obvious symptoms you have! I hope you find the help you need.
