can anybody help? confused about my treatment for polycystic ovariesFrom: sharon (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 25 Nov 2002 14:33:13 -0600 (CST)
where do i start? Have had problems with my menstrual cycle since I was 15. Sometimes my period turns up and other times I can go for nine months without one. I have never had problems with weight gain or falling pregnant either. That was until this year when I suddenly gained around 8kgs (20lbs) in around 5 months. Most of that was gained in only 2 weeks. I had several visits to the doctor and it took until September this year to find out that I had polycystic ovaries. All my bloodwork and hormone tests came back normal though. Since October I have been on Diane 35. I lost most of the weight I had gained in the first couple of weeks of taking the medication (does it normally kick in this quick as one week of that was my period). I have always taken the pill Microgynen 30 before this and have never had any problems. The only thing that I have been doing differently is exercising an extra day a week. I have always exercised regularly. I have however found that since being on Diane 35 that I am holding fluid between my hips and knees which I don't normally do on other pills. Is this a normal side effect? As I have returned to my normal weight and am very fit this bothers me. Has anyone else had this problem? Does having polycystic ovaries mean that I have PCOs. I have some excess body hair but nothing that really annoys me - a few here and there and since having laser surgery have normal pap smears. I have occasionally darkening of the skin on my face but this only occurs in summer and goes away in winter. Do you think the doctor is clutching at straws or should I continue on my current course of treatment? Could a bout of depression trigger the weight gain? The weight fell off after finishing a bad relationship. Is there any other tests I could have done to determine whether or not I have PCOs? I would appreciate any advice on this subject because at this point in time I am thinking of quitting the contraceptive pill altogether. thanks Sharon
