generic vs. namebrand metFrom: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 14 Nov 2002 12:00:29 -0600 (CST)
In a recent post concerning someone being unable to handle met, Sonnet happened to mention that while she was able to tolerate both the name brand and the generic met, only the name brand kind gave her any symptom relief. I am wondering what other's experiences with this have been? I am wondering because, during the early half of this year, up until the last day in May (my last real period), I was having 5-6 week cycles, hair was great, etc. In mid-July or so, my hair started falling out, my facial hair started getting worse, and by late August, I had not seen another period and went back on BCPs, reluctanctly. I have been blaming this on stress, because I didn't want to accept the possibility that maybe the met stops working over time. BUT it recently occured to me, around late April or early May, that was when I ran out of name-brand Glucophage and was switched to generic Met by my pharmacy. So my co-pay went from 20 bucks to 7... I was glad. But now I am wondering if maybe - just maybe - that was what caused my symptoms to come back? Anyone else had an experience like this? What are others experiences with making the switch? Either saw a big difference, positive or negative, or saw no difference? I have a doc appt. next week, I plan to ask about the possibilty of going back on the name brand glucophage. I guess it would have to be the XR now, they don't mind the regular version in name brand anymore, do they? I really feel like I have to push for this because ... well, my it seems like the only other explanation is the met has stopped working, and that would be crushing... - jodi
