Probably because my understanding is that taking oral diabetic meds while pregnant is still controversial. Women who are pregnant and diabetic must be closely monitored and if something else is needed to correct their blood sugar, insulin is often the first choice because it affects only the mother, not the fetus.

However, I admit that I am not up on the latest research about metformin/ glucophage and how safe it is to continue to take that during pregnancy. I know that many women take it successfully in the first trimester to reduce the incidence of miscarriage. >

Actually, my doctor said that it is due to the increased resistance to insulin put out by the placenta. A woman who is insulin resistant to start with, but not diabetic, is more likely to become gestationally diabetic due to the action of the placenta (which is why a good doctor will screen all his patients for diabetes in their 6th month). After the birth of the baby, the insulin resistance action of the placenta is gone (since the placenta is gone), and most women return to normal blood sugar readings without continuing to take insulin.

And yes you are absolutely right about Type II diabetes; it has to be well controlled or else during pregnancy they could have lot of bad complications for their baby and themselves.

So my comment about not taking Met while pregnant may have been incorrect because I am not aware of what the current research says. I was going off my own experience 7 and 11 years ago, when my doctor told me I had to use insulin shots because they only wanted to affect my insulin, not the baby's.

Best wishes,
