Homocysteine Gene Mutation, clotting problems,pcos?, the pill?From: Angel (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 12 Nov 2002 22:22:10 -0600 (CST)
This is complicated but I am hoping for input on this. I am a 34 year old female I work in the medical field. But THIS is totally something new to me. I recently had a bout with a superficial thrombosis after an overseas flight. I even had compression stockings on because of constant leg pain during that flight travel (knowing I might be at risk). The thrombosis was more than 3 months ago yet I still have excruciating phlebitis (vein irritation pain in one leg in the mid thigh saphenous area). I've had a history of chronic leg aches since puberty and severe menses, dysmenorhea, cystic acne, and even irritable bowl during PMS. After a slew of tests, ultrasounds, and specialists with this prolonged phlebitis I've been diagnosed with the MTHFR Gene mutation (heterozygous). I am on Coumadin and 4 mg Folic Acid. To make matters worse I am also B-12 deficient and am taking injections for that too. HERE IS THE DILEMMA: My Hematologist wants me to get off the pill (Yasmin) completely and says it's a risk factor for future thrombosis. But Yasmin was the only thing that kept my monthly misery under control! My OBGYN has just switched me to OrthoEvra patch with a low dose Rx of Spironalactone thinking this is a better alternative. **How do I resolve my female problems without putting myself at risk for continued phlebitis or another thrombosis?** My blood work shows high C-reactive protein and borderline Lupus Anticoagulant-- consistent with Thrombophilia. **And one more thing... is there a link with PCOS, vein problems, and MTHFR Gene Mutation? If so I want to get this information to my doctor.** Thanks so much! Angel
