I would consider it might be withdrawal symptoms from the meds. They would go away with the valium because you are remedicating.

The vivid dreams could be a response to stress or an effect of the meds. I had to take percocet when I had my wisdom teeth out and i had some pretty crazy dreams/visions on that.

Are you out of pain enough now that giving up the meds is an option? I really think it has more to do with that than the general anesthesia. Talk to your doc about it.
