anesthesia and oophectomyFrom: Mel (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 6 Nov 2002 11:24:55 -0600 (CST)
I had an emergency laparotomy Sunday, Oct 27th, under general anesthesia, for a single ovary removal. I have been having some unusual symptoms and I wonder if they are due to the anesthesia. From what I understand, hormones should not be a factor. The first few nights in the hospital, I would wake up startled and jumpy several times a night. I had a PCA with Demerol during my hospital stay. The first night I went home, I would wake up freezing cold and drenched in sweat. This has been occurring since I got home and has not improved except for the night I took valium. Also, I have been having vivid, somewhat frightening, dreams since I got home. I had been experiencing some emotional highs and lows during the day, but this has improved to baseline approximately post op day # 6. I don't know how to explain it well, but I have a feeling that something happened in surgery that perhaps I have a slight memory of. Can you educate me on the effects of anesthesia in relation to subconscious memories? Also, can my physical and emotional symptoms be an after effect of anesthesia?
