Re: Pregnancy advice needed pleaseFrom: paula (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 29 Oct 2002 17:32:29 -0600 (CST)
there are two schools of thought with both issues. first with the met. some doctors believe that taking met throughout the entire pregnancy can help with late trimester platelet depletion. others believe that taking it throughout the pregnancy increases the risk to the baby. i was on met the first 7 weeks of my pregnancy, long enough to have the benefit of reduced miscarriages seen in PCOS patients. then i was taken off of it. i was placed on insulin to control my blood sugars at 9w and i do not believe it would have been that soon had i stayed on the met. so, if you have problems with insulin resistance, i would advise you talk to your OB seriously about the effects of staying on the met, and also the possibility of testing you for gestational diabetes sooner than is standard. at the time i was taken off met, i decided it was the best thing to do because i didn't want to even potentially cause harm to my baby, however, new research may have come out in the past several months regarding this issue. so make sure your doctor explains everything to your satisfaction before deciding. taking the shots wasn't that bad, but of course i would have rather not done it. regarding the progesterone, i would immediately damand my progesterone levels be checked and treated with a suppliment if low. some doctors believe that the progesterone has no effects on preserving a pregnancy, but will give it to patients on the basis that it really wont cause any problems. (of course other doctors aren't convinced that it is harmless). the other school of thought on this subject says that progesterone will not help save a pregnancy that is doomed to fail for any other cause other than progesterone levels. meaning, if you were pregnant and the fetus had issues (rather than your progesterone levels having issues) than the pregnancy would still fail, however if your only problem is progesterone levels, than progesterone supplimentation can help. i was placed on progesterone at 7w and remained on it until i was 13w. you can actually usually be safelly removed from the suppliments at around 10 weeks. this is when the baby takes over hormone production. hope this helps! love, paula Liam 08/26/02
