The numbers on lab tests will probably always be different every time you get tested. They can fluctuate for many reasons.... what you ate the day before, how long you have fasted, etc. That is why I do not agree with the fasting blood test as being an "end all" determination of what is going on.

You sound very concerned, and you should be. You want to know if anyone else has had similar experiences, and I will say, yes, I have. My fasting blood tests, 4 of them, showed fluctuations also, but all came out "normal" even though I AM ABSOLUTELY insulin resistant and hypoglycemic and have benefited TREMENDOUSLY on Glucophage. Diabetes runs in my family also even though it's the exact opposite of what I have.

I also agree with you that there is no such thing as borderline. You either have a disorder or you don't. A problem that many of us face because it just doesn't show up on this fasting blood test.

You can do a couple of things. You can request a 3 to 5 hour IGTT (Insulin Glucose Tolerance Test) which shows what happens in your body over hourly time after ingesting pure carbohydrate over time.

Or you can write down ALL your symptoms, which from the sound of things, are IR related. Everything from PCOS, your high cholesterol and blood pressure problems, and other issues such as any headaches or dizziness, frequent drops or intense hunger shortly after eating, low toleration to carbs, etc. And ask your doctor if you can TRY a small dose of Glucophage (I mean small...like 1/2 a pill) for one month and see if there are any changes in your symptoms. It is becoming normal practice to use Glucophage in treating PCOS so this would not be out of line.

Good luck.
