Hi Carrie

Yes, I am most definitely significantly overweight, I have really just gotten started. I didn't set out to lose weight, oddly enough, I started an exercise plan, and I decided that I was going to strive for health, not weight. I started looking around online at the different sites, and researched just how bad all the stuff they put in processed food is for you. I expected some weight would come off just because of less sugar, etc, but I didn't expect how much and how quickly it would come off. As far as portion control, I just try to be smart. I can't say I weigh and measure everything, but I try to guage most of the time what I should and should not eat. I also try not to linger at the dinner table, because I know I will eat more than I should. I don't think there is any magic formula, if you really think about what is good for you, and what is not, it's pretty easy to judge. It's a lot more work to go this route, there isn't a darn thing at the fast food restaurants, or take-out places that is good for you, so it can get a little labor intensive. What really worked for my husband and I (they come along for the ride, don't they? :-) ) was to change something small a little at a time. For instance, our first rule was no fast food, then 80 oz. water daily (this made a HUGE difference!), then no soda, then switch to low-fat versions of dairy, then only healthy oils, then add fish twice a week, then switch to whole grain bread, then whole wheat pasta, etc. Every week we add something new, and don't go back. Can't say it will work for everyone, I think it depends on what you ate before, also, but it has worked for us :-) (He lost 50 lbs, down to goal weight now, as a side note)
