Because sugar does not offer nutritional value and is not a required nutrient, a Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) has not been established. RDAs are reserved for nutrients that should be consumed by groups of healthy people to meet nutritional needs. Most experts agree, however, that a nutritionally sound diet should derive no more than 10% of total calories from added sugar, which translates to about 50 grams or 10 teaspoons of simple sugars for a 2,000-calorie diet. Experts would probably also advise against the consumption of too many foods that are high in sugar because they take up room reserved, ideally, for healthier foods.
