Apparently by lying on the left side (especially when pregnant or overweight with specific leg/feet swelling) blood flows from your legs back to your heart and kidneys better - therefore improving circulation so that the kidneys have more to work with. This is an extrememly common recomendation during pregnancy by all dr.s and childbirth classes. I have also read about it for general swelling/edema not pregnancy related. Anyway, it doesn't hurt to try!
