Re: Edema (Swollen Legs/Feet)From: Kimberly (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 8 Oct 2002 01:17:34 -0500 (CDT)
If you are not already on a low-carb diet, you might want to try it. I have all kinds of swelling if I'm eating too many carbs. After limiting my carbs to less than 30 for several days, 95% of it goes away. It seems that if I start swelling it will not go away for several weeks - so I can wait it out, or cut the carbs and it goes away sooner. It does sound as if you need to see an additional dr. however. If nothing else works, try the low-carbing, even if it gives a bit of relief it will be worth it (not to mention the added benefit of weight loss). Most importantly, make sure you are spending a lot of time on your left side so that your kidneys can more easily get rid of extra water/waste. You should lie on your left side for at least 20 minutes at a time and a body pillow can help make it more comfortable. Drink as much water as possible (try for a full gallon a day)- as this will also help your kidneys be more efficient. Also, check your blood pressure frequently, and if it's way up, go to the dr. asap. Hope you feel better soon.
