Re: Ready To CryFrom: SusieQ (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 1 Oct 2002 23:48:58 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Amelie, You are not alone, many of us do have the long heavy periods. I bled 20 days per month just as you describe. Some birth control pills might be able to help, but that is only a temporary help. Your doctor needs to find out why you are having this bleeding pattern. What symptoms of PCOS do you actually have? Do you have cystic ovaries? You mentioned no IR. Have you tried any other birth control pills? Did your doc suggest metformin? Some people have the added benefit of menstrual control from the met, even if they are not IR. How do you know for sure that you are not IR? Did your doc do a fasting insulin or a complete IGTT? Many of us have a normal fasting insulin but the IGTT reveals the IR. Have you been screened for thyroid disorders, von Willebrand's disease, etc.? How about fibroids? The most important thing is that excessive bleeding has many causes, not just PCOS, and you shouldn't have to put up with this for so long. Excessive bleeding is usually measured by the number of maxi pads you use, not tampons. If you change a super maxi pad more than once per hour, it is considered excessive bleeding. Have you had an ultrasound to measure the thickness of the endometrium within your uterus? I realize this is a long reply with more questions than answers, but I hope you can take this to your doc and get a few answers. luck, SusieQ
