Strong info supporting the use of metforminFrom: Red (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 27 Sep 2002 21:56:42 -0500 (CDT)
A doc from the Jewish Hospital in Cincinatti gave me hard clinical evidence in the use of metformin alone or in conjunction with other treatments in getting pregnant, through pregnancy, and just for general insulin related issues. Basically it describe clinical trial results on the above issues. Guess what?? He recommends metformin for basically all PCOS patients and certainly for those with IR (there is no doubt) it is called for. It talked about its ability to regulate normal menstrual cycles and ovulation with 6 months in 91% of PCOS patients, it contributes to a 3kg weight loss by three months and 7kg by 6months, and it's ability to aid in decreasing insulin levels, androgen levels, and most importantly the role it plays (either by itself or along with other treatments) in conception rates and if continued through pregnancy in its ability to decrease miscarriages from a rate of 65% (without metformin) down to 16% (those who continued on metformin) It also discusses that to date no differences in the babies whose mothers stayed on met in terms of height/ weight and motor/social development. The doctor was great, he responded to an e-mail question I had and just sent the clinical data - to help show my doctor the need for metformin. His name is Dr. Charles Glueck and he might forward the same info to you. His e-mail is glueckch@healthall.com and his number is (513) 585-7800 although I would only call if you were hoping to see him. He actually offered if I hit the red tape to come to Cincinatt for a one-time evaluation - he would give me the metformin protocol and coordinate long distance through testing and working with my doctor during pregnancy. Great info and is important to all!!! Denise/NC
