Re: Aspartame

Most of the medical research, and the FDA, states that aspartame is safe for most people. Those who are phenylketuronics, of course, can't eat it, since they don't have the enzyme to process it. That's the label on the package. Others seem to be sensitive (eg: my husband drops his IQ about 80 points after a large volume of nutrasweet) to it in one way or another (others complain of headaches). However, for most people, it's not a problem.

Most of the anti-aspartame hype (eg: Betty Martini's work, and the web-sites) is not grounded in good science.

There is some research (I know Belle talked about this in the past), that it will raise insulin levels, even though it doesn't raise blood sugar. The body tastes the sweetness and thinks it's sugar and needs insulin. That worsen's our problem.

He/She likes the tea sweet! One other concern about using so much sweetener is that it gives you the taste for sweetness, and it can be harder to contain, and eventually get rid of, cravings for carbs and sweetness. If someone's metabolism is fine, it shouldn't be much of a problem, though.
