Re: I am sick & tired of being sick & tired...From: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 11 Sep 2002 17:53:46 -0500 (CDT)
I am sorry to hear about all that you are suffering. I am 24 and have PCOS. I too am overweight and have had fertility problems in addition to always being sick, depressed and tired. Over the past year and a half I have been intensely studying nutrition and the correlations between nutrition and illnesses of all sorts (I am working toward a degree in nutrition). Anyway, I discovered something a few months ago that I am more than happy to share because I wish everyone health and happiness in their lives. I discovered something called the Mcdougall Program and everything that I read in it was the same conclusions that I was coming to anyway through my own research and because I already knew what I was reading was based on sound scientific facts and had been well tested by this doctor I decided that I have nothing to lose by trying it for myself. Basically it requies you to make a change in your diet and add, if possible some mild activity like a small walk or such to your daily routine for twelve days and if you are not satisfied at the end of the trial you can forget it forever. The best thing about it is that although you have to change what you eat you can literally eat as much as you want and all day (without having to measure out and count any of it) and I promise you that you will not only lose weight but within a few days you are going to have more energy and feel better than you have since your youthful days gone past. Both my husband and I did this together. I started out at 294 pounds and within three weeks the scale said 276.5, I began to have incredible energy and became more productive than I have been in a long time, I was able to think more clearly, My depression ended, my insomnia went away, I was able to take 30 minutes fast paced walks and it felt great and perhaps the largest surprise for my husband and myself is that after four years of suffering infertility we conceived our first child and found out only because we decided to use a pregnancy test as a heads or tails type of thing and since we expected a negative (as always) you can well imagine the shock of a positive test result. Now I am pregnant and still using the mcdougall program (it is safe for pregnant women because it doesn't lack any nutrients) and I am not finding that I am gaining too much weight as many women fear and I don't expect to gain more than 20 pounds because that is really all that is even necessary. I know that this sounds almost too good to be true but it does work and it is based on very scietifically and nutritionally sound principles. I have never been a person to do fad types of anything and I have never found any interest in dieting cause I have only seen in dieting that people lose weight but then most do gain it back because they stop their diets. The Mcdougall program isn't a diet and if you choose it it is a lifestyle change but I presonally have never known anyone to try it who actually wanted to go back to their old habits of eating. you can explore Dr. Mcdougall's webpage at: I recommend buying his books but no need to buy them from his website unless you don't mind paying an arm and a leg for them. You can get wonderfully inexpensive copies from: half.ebay.com I bought almost all his books from there and I think it really is one of the best investments I have ever made. When I finish my degree and have my Nutrition consulting practice I for sure will be introducing my clients to this program because it does work and it is something that is adaptable to everyone. Of course as the book reccomends always check with your dr. before starting any kind of new diet or exercise regimine. As for PCOS I can tell you a few things that prompted me to do some research. I combed infertility boards and talk to many women in USA and Canada who suffer from PCOS and one question I asked all of them is what sort of things do you eat. I indeed did see a pattern of dietary habits that were very similar amongst all the women (myself included, at that time) and that the diet wasn't exactly very good. It really seemed to make a lot of sense to me and I read about biochemistry (the bodies chemical makeup) and all about hormones and then did research about health trends and then about food additives and preservatives and so forth in the meat and dairy industry. I will say a lot of things made sense and I wouldn't be surprised if one day scientists will tell us that PCOS (as well as many illnesses in the body that exist today that did not exist in people of the past) is diet related. I also wouldn't be surprised if not being able to breastfeed has roots in one's diet as well...the thing is that there are not yet enough scientists studying the correlation between diet and breastfeeding difficulties of patients suffering from PCOS. I am also not of the opinion that PCOS is not reversible...I think that the problems with mentsrual cycles and infertility can reverse themselves as your body heals if you are eating a proper diet. The body is capable of healing itself and renewing its tissues....every seven years our bodies have completely renewed all the tissues and cells. However, in the same light our body can work against itself too. The thing really that will ultimately decide whether your body will start to work against itself or heal and maintain itself is depending on how adequately you fuel your body. I hope this helps...truly it really sucks to always be sick and suffering and it sucks to always feel hungry when you are dieting. If you have nothing to lose and only possible gain and benefit from at least reading and contemplating and perhaps even tyring the Mcdougall plan for the 12 days then I would say it would appear to be a good thing, logically. Trust me I am not writing all this for any personal gain to myself because what have I to gain from telling anyone this stuff? The only person who stands to benefit is YOU!
