Re: Alopecia ..hair loss and pcosFrom: Renee (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 28 Aug 2002 22:43:16 -0700
I think the hairdreser may have alarmed you unnecessarily. You need a physician to make the real diagnosis, and determine the cause of the hair loss. There is the hair thinning/male pattern baldness that we get from the testosterone levels from PCOS. That is one thing, and likely what you're going through. The other, more severe type of hair loss is what we commonly think of as alopecia (there is another descriptor word that goes with it to describe this form, but I forget it). This is complete loss of all body hair--head, eye brows, eye lashes, pubic hair, etc. It is either genetic, an effect of chemotherapy, due to a severe nutritional deficiency or an underlying illness. So, don't think you've got the most serious form, just because the hairdresser used the term. See your physician, and have your testosterone levels checked. Aldactone and glucophage could help control the hormore levels, and therefore the hair. Renee
