Re: Male pattern baldness.....don't call me crazyFrom: Kimberly (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 27 Aug 2002 00:53:37 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Katie - I'm no expert on this topic whatsoever but I do remember reading once that the 'experts' were begining to think m-p-baldness was caused BY insulin resistance. This would lead me to believe that perhaps the males in your family simply aren't insulin resistant - so you couldn't really compare yourself to them. This is a longshot hypothesis, but the best I can come up with for the moment. I always see balding men with big beer belly's and I wonder to myself why no one is doing anything to get these men treatment - or even advise them on what may be causing their problems. I do believe however that even if you have PCOS your own personal genes do tend to have an impact on your symptoms. If you have naturally thick, course hair, I would think there would be a good chance that you won't have many problems. Even if you lose a lot of hair there will still be a good amount left. I myself noticed a huge loss of hair in my first trimester of pregnancy, and it simply didn't grow back. It's not much of an issue, but I have little doubt I'm gonna be wearing sunscreen on my head when I'm in my 70's!!!:) Because I am fair skinned and a redhead, I have almost no body hair at all - let alone excess body hair. I can go for 3 weeks without shaving my legs and still go out of the house in shorts with confidence. I have most of the other PCOS symptoms however - so everything is relative to your own body (and also your age). I don't think there is enough research as of yet to difinatively say what causes m-p-baldness - so I wouldn't worry about it too much.
