Re: 8 weeks pregnant and need help!! What tests need to be done? From: paula (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 24 Aug 2002 21:02:37 -0500 (CDT)
hello! congratulations to your daughter! i am at the end of my first pregnancy (am being induced monday morning). the only hormone that i know needs to be checked is progesterone. i would demand this test be done, and done immediately (even if you have to pay out of pocket). women with PCOS have a higher miscarriage rate because of inadequate progesterone. there is a lot of debate in the medical community as to whether progesterone suppliments are really beneficial or not, so you may have a doctor resistant to them. it is my personal opinion that taking progesterone suppliments will not save an embryo that is flawed (ie..chromosomal problems) but is fundamental in saving a healthy pregnancy that is just lacking in progesterone support. if the progesterone levels are low, there are a few options you can explore. the first is progesterone suppositories, which are generally inserted vaginally before bed. i was on these the first few days, but in myself and in some other women they can increase the risk of infection and they can cause a lot of vaginal irritation. i was switched to prometrium (a pill form of progesterone) 100mg 1X daily at 7 1/2 weeks gestation. in reality you only need to stay on the suppliments through week 10 (the beginning of week 11), after that the baby has usually taken over hormone production and the mom's lack of progesterone production ceases to matter...however, most doctors (when they give you them to begin with) will keep moms on them through week 12 or 13 just to be on the safe side. i remained on the suppliments through week 13. the only other thing i can think of is she may want to be checked for gestational diabeties earlier than other women, especially if she is overweight. i was placed on insulin at 9 weeks. other than that, i really can't think of any thing she needs to worry about. in reality, her progesterone is adequate to the task, but i would still DEMAND she be tested and treated if the results are low....like i said, you may have to pay for it out of pocket if the doctor doesn't agree with your ideas, but why wait until after a miscarriage to discover there is something wrong?... wishing you the very best of luck! love, paula 38w3d w/Liam
