Re: Fasting glucoseFrom: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 22 Aug 2002 14:33:11 -0500 (CDT)
The glucose test is *very* accurate. The deal is that with PCOS, our glucose levels are usually normal. Testing your glucose doesn't tell you a thing about PCOS, only that you are or aren't diabetic. Fasting insulin can be useful, but even then it's not a cut and dried thing. While it's still not a perfect test, as it's not as sensitive as we would like, the best test we have for IR that you're likely to get from your doctor is called an IGTT. You fast, drink a sugary drink, and your glucose *and insulin* levels are drawn over a period of hours. It shows the way your insulin production reacts to your glucose levels. Again it's not perfect, and it misses a fair number of mild cases of IR, but it's your best bet if your physician is diagnosing PCOS based on IR.
