Re: advice needed on ortho-tricyclen/bcp'sFrom: Sonnet (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 16 Aug 2002 02:20:55 -0500 (CDT)
"The use of a "triphasic" combined oral contraceptive should be avoided as the early cycle ethinyloestradiol dose is often too low to inhibit dominant follicle selection and hence follicular development,39 theoretically having the potential to increase, rather than reduce, the number of ovarian cysts." from the more recent Kidson article in MJA: http://www.mja.com.au/public/issues/nov16/kidson/kidson.html (the footnote citation is "39:Fauser BCJM, Van Heusden AM. Manipulation of human ovarian function: physiological concepts and clinical consequences. Endocrine Rev 1997; 18: 71-106.") I have heard of other issues related to triphasic pills, such as having more breakthrough bleeding, not enough androgen "stopping power," and a variation in hormone levels that further aggravates the messy cycles we already have. That being said I want to point out that I think monophasic bcp's can be very useful in treating the outward problems of PCOS and make it a much more manageable disease for a lot of women. You don't have to stay away from all birth control, but there are so many options and formulations out there - find the one that works best for your needs and your body.
