Re: does metformin work if you are not a diabetic and don't have insulin resistanceFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netWed, 14 Aug 2002 08:32:37 -0500 (CDT)
Hi, I am an Australian (living in Philippines) Chick. Metformin is also used here - by knowledgeable doctors, others not up to date just prescribe BCP and Clomid (stimulates ovulation) and others don 't believe it exists and that the women just eat too much. The whole spectrum, I guess. It is often (though not always) helpful to people who don't have detectable insulin resistance. This is because just becuase it is not medically detected taht you are insulin resistance, the tests are not very sensitive, and you may still have insulin resistance. My Filipina endocrinologist (who is brilliant) always prescribes metformin for women with PCOS regardless of what the medical tests showes in terms of insulin resistance. I also have a gynecologist friend here. She says she actually likes treating women with PCOS becasue in her experience, most cases respond very well and often quickly to metformin, some lifestyle changes and a bit of psychosocial support. Best wishes Sally
