does metformin work if you are not a diabetic and don't have insulin resistance

I've just been diagnosed with PCOS, but without a glucose intolerance. However it now takes me 7 months on the fantastically well-funded (not)British National Health Service to see a specialist. (I guess I don't have to worry about the insurance hmmm)

In the meantime I am dieting/exercising and hoping that might have an affect. I notice that all you American chicks are taking Metformin. But that is an anti-insulin drug - does it work to help your pcos if you are not glucose resistant?

I'm a bit worried because I've not a had a period in 5 months. I've also been given Progesterone to bring on a 'bleed' but its not working so far. Could someone who has access to a doctor advise me?

Many Thanks,
