This is the big debate: what comes first, the weight gain or PCOS. I think it has been pretty well accepted that PCOS has a genetic link, and also that some women start to see signs of PCOS in their pre-teen years. I have heard doctors say..."if you just would lose the weight'. Well, the problem is: with PCOS, losing weight is much harder than for the average person without PCOS. For many, you add the confounding factor of Insulin Resistance. Basically with PCOS, your hormones are out of balancse, and that is what is helping you gain weight instead of losing weight. So, the goal of any management approach is to get the hormones back in balance. Eating low or moderate carb foods, regular exercise and sometimes taking an Insulin Sensitizer can help accomplish this. The overweight part just makes things worse. So, being overweight is not the total cause of PCOS. Don't let anyone even suggest that to you.
