It's sort of a chicken or egg argument. As a general answer, obesity does not CAUSE PCOS. But obesity on its own can cause some of the same symptoms as PCOS in milder forms. It can also make insulin resistance worse, so obesity and PCOS get locked into this sort of vicious circle type thing. However it's important also to realize that PCOS does cause obesity. Obesity is one of the symptoms. I think too many doctors focus on "lose weight and you'll be fine" when that's not the case at all (PCOS never just goes away, and lots of thin women have it too.) We end up with too much guilt, with blaming ourselves for the health problems, when this disease that just happened to us causes the health issues AND the obesity as well.
