Re: I just started Glucophage... advice neededFrom: cw (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 11 Aug 2002 15:50:01 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Jessica: The thing I noticed most about glucophage, for me, is that it made it possible for me to be able to eat more balanced without problems, and it stopped the constant hunger and shaking spells that I used to experience due to IR. My rapid heart beat attacks stopped. It also made it possible for my cholesterol medication to start working, and finally, it went down. I don't know what symptoms you were suffering from, but whatever IR symptoms you had, they should go away once you are on glucophage regularly. Many women with pcos who are on glucophage only as their primary medication, experience returned periods and ovulation, fewer hair problems and that sort of thing. The best time to start taking it is in the evening, mostly likely at dinner. Make sure you take it with a MEAL and not a snack or empty stomach. If you experience side effects like stomach problems and diarreah, you may want to consider cutting the pill in half for awhile, and then those side effects should diminish. Another side effect I had at first was that it made me very sleepy. Once I cut it in half, I no longer suffered from that. A lot of doctors suggest eventually taking it with every main meal, 3 x a day. I started with 1/2 pill once a day, and I now take 1/2 pill 3x a day and it has made a tremendous difference in my quality of my life. I did not lose much weight, only a few pounds, but I am not very heavy either. The thing I noticed the most re: weight is that I am no longer GAINING weight. What a relief! Good luck. Hope this info helps.
