Hi!

Even though irregular periods are a major symptom of PCOS there are women with PCOS who do have regular or semi regular periods in the stage that they are at with their PCOS. PCOS is also a progressive syndrome. That means that just because you do not have certain symptoms now does not mean that you may not have them later. Because PCOS effects hormone levels women with PCOS have differing "hormone mixes" and because of that they can have varying symptoms at varying levels.

I am now in my late twenties and I have been showing PCOS symptoms since my late teens. Not having regular periods was not one of my first symptoms. I did not get irregular periods until the last few years. By saying this I am NOT saying that YOU will eventually become irregular. I'm saying that because this syndrome is progressive in nature you could. My cousin has PCOS and she has had a similar experience and she did not become irregular until after her diagnosis was made. Some women with PCOS are pretty regular and some rarely get a period at all and there are many variances between the two extremes. From what I have seen anovulation may occur more frequently than irregular periods and anovulation according to my doctor is more of a "dead give away" for PCOS than being irregular since a woman can be irregular for many reasons other than PCOS.

The progressive nature of the syndrome can make PCOS difficult to diagnose. I obviously had PCOS in my early teens and could have benefitted greatly from some sort of treatment but at that time I only had a few symptoms. Because my PCOS had not progressed to the point where many symptoms were present it was difficult for any doctor to come up with a definitive diagnosis. That is why many women go so long being misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all. Hope this helps and welcome to the forum. I hope you get as much benefit from it as I have. God bless, Tera
