Becky,

I was started on XR because that was all my insurance would cover. My dr. hadn't heard of it so she did some research and decided it was ok. The XR stands for extended release. I have read that it is meant to replace standard Glucophage. This way we won't have to be taking meds 3 or 4 times a day. I take mine at night before I go to bed. Dr. told me I could take it any time I want. Bedtime is when I remember it. Personally, I think it only comes in 500mg. I take two at the same time. Your dr. probably heard about it and thought it would be easier for you to take them all at once. As far as a I know there is no difference in the results of the drugs.
