An important book to read!From: J.W.J. (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 26 Jul 2002 00:14:06 -0500 (CDT)
Hi everyone, I just read the most enlightening, informative book. It is entitled, "Women, Weight and Hormones" by Elizabeth Lee Vliet, M.D. She also authored, "Screaming to be Heard--Hormonal Connections Women Suspect and Doctors Still Ignore". Please, everyone out there who wants to be educated about their health both now and in the future, get hold of this book. I got it from the community library. The book is copyrighted in 2001, so the information is very up-to-date. Dr. Vliet has two successful womens' practices in Tucson and Texas. She has spent her life with weight problems and has dedicated her career to researching just how women's hormones play a role in weight and also total health and well-being. She explains each hormone very thoroughly. She tells what are the best tests to be done to measure each of them and then tells optimal levels for many of them that she has found through her clinical practice. She talks about PCOS, thyroid, insulin resistance, and many other issues important to people on this forum. She talks about tests to insist on that most doctors won't even mention to you. She talks about birth control pills. She talks about post-menopause. Through reading this book I decided to ask for some basic hormone levels that I never would have asked for, and found that a couple of them are too low, and that is probably why I have not been feeling myself for over a year now. I now have a glimmer of hope I didn't have before. Please, read the book, and if you have any questions about it feel free to ask me on the forum. Jessica
