You can find lots more information on PCOS, what causes it, and treatment options at http://www.pcosupport.org. You might find the link in the upper right hand, PCOS 101, most helpful, but have a good look through the whole site for info.

Metformin does make you sick at first but it also gets better! Make sure she works up to her dose SLOWLY - starting at 1/2 a pill or even less and sowly increasing the dose each week or two weeks. It should take a few weeks at least to get up to her full dose. Take it also with meals and see how she feels. Most women find that the sickness goes away after a few weeks.
