THINGS TO DO IN NYC (TO ROSEMARY MUSKOPF)From: Jenn (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 25 Jul 2002 09:09:31 -0500 (CDT)
Hi Rosey, Yea, let me know how it turns out. Very curious. Hope it goes well for you too. You didn't really tell me what you like to do and what your budget is, so I am not sure where to begin. If you like art, there are lots in uptown Manhattan. If you take the 6 train to 86th st. (I think. you will have to check the map), the Metropolitan museum of art is only a few blocks away and if you walk further uptown on 5th avenue, there is the guggenheim museum. The MET is HUGE. It will take days just to see the whole museum. If you decide to visit the met and the guggenheim, central part is right there as well. If you walk towards columbus circle, you will find many many places to shop. It is pretty upscale there. Check out FAO Schwartz. It's the coolest toys store I've ever been to so far. Oh and you should also check out Serendipity's on the upper west side. They are famous for their ice-cream. I've been there a couple of times. On weekends, there will probably be quite a wait though. btw, back to the museum thread, if you don't mind going out of the way, you can visit my favorite museum, the Cloisters. It's in the Bronx. I think you take the A train to get there. You don't have to worry about the neighborhood...if you get off at the right stop, there is an elevator that takes you straight to the base of the hill where the cloisters sit on top of. You walk up this really pretty stretch of rare flowers and plants to reach the museum or you can take a bus from the base of the hill , but if the weather is nice, i prefer to walk b/c the view is really great. The cloisters is actually a castle where all the stones were brought from Europe and it's all gothic art and sculpures, really cool. Sorry I couldn't give you exact directions. I don't go uptown that often. I like to stay downtown--my favorite area in Manhattan. :) ok, downtown, there are tons of places to shop if you walk along broadway. I think you should start in the city hall area (or the Chinatown/Little Italy area if you like--then you have to take the N or R to canal street). You can take the N or R train to City Hall. If you were coming before 9/11 of last year, I would've suggest the WCT area but it's really not that scenic anymore unless you want to see burnt piles of steel. I'm not sure if the N or R stops at Cortlandt street anymore, but it they do, you should get off there. Century 21 sells a lot of designer clothes and accessories and shoes at discount prices. Find Broadway and if you continue to walk uptown on Broadway, there are tons of shops. You will probably pass by Chinatown. There are plenty of places of eat there. What kind of vegetarian are you? Do you eat seafood or are you a strict vegetarian? :) ok, I'm not a vegetarian, but most places have food that contains no meat. I will just give you a list of places that I like to go to: In Chinatown: Noodletown (right in front to Confucious Plaza), Sweet N Tart (they have good dim sum which they serve anytime), OceanPalace (good dimsum but they stop making it after 1 or 2pm), if you can find Baxter street, there are 3 Vietnamese places right next to each other..the one in the middle is the best (order their summer veggy rolls. you dip it in sauce they give you and it is really good). If you like Indian food, I always go to east 6th street betwween 1st and 2nd avenue. The whole street is occupied by Indian resturants. btw, the Indian places are located in the east village, not Chinatown anymore. In the same neighborhood, if you like Japanese food, there is this place called Sandobe's on 11th street between 1st and 2nd or bet 1st and avenue A and right next to it is a really good dessert place called Veniero's. Be sure to try their pastries. They are all great. If you walk around the east village, you will find many small shops. If you prefer art galleries to museums, if you head up to Soho (take the N or R to Prince street) there are plenty. You just have to walk around. oh, and if you are into clubs and bars, there are many in the soho and east village area. ok, i am bombarding you with info. Not sure what you like. If you can be more specific, I can be more precise. I hope this was helpful. Let me know if you have any more questions.
